Dress That Naked Wall: Top Ten Decorative Wall Accents

We all have it. That bare spot. It feels vulnerable, almost naked. It simply must be covered to make a room complete, but with what?

You’ve picked the furniture, the carpets, even the window treatments – but what to do with that glaring, empty wall space?

Here’s my list of the Top Ten Decorative Wall Accents:

1. Hand-touched Giclee Print on Canvas – OK, it’s not an original artwork, but it looks pretty darn close and is much more affordable. With the quality of giclee reproduction coupled with the texture of canvas and the added texture provided by hand-embellished oil paint, only you and your wallet will know the difference. With gallery-wrapped options, no frame is needed, and say goodbye to the glare you get from glass-encased prints.

2. Memo or Chalkboard – Make that accent functional as well as decorative. For busy families on the go, a message board is an indispensable way to remember those little errands. Choices include magnetic chalkboards with unique magnets, ornate wood or decorative metal framed corkboards with funky pushpins, or memo boards coupled with art prints.

3. Decorative Ironwork – A unique wall hanging, it will not compete with colors, patterns and textures in the room like a painting might. Iron finishes can range from rustic and antique to shiny and new, depending on how you want to complement the rest of the elements in the room.

4. Uniquely Framed or Antique Glass Mirror – I love the look of smoky antiqued styles, they are mirrors without being mirrors, if you know what I mean. They add reflected light and help to visually enlarge a room.

5. Candle Sconce – Add a little romantic light and instant ambiance without paying an electrician to rewire. Wrap cascading bead garland around the base of your candle to really dress it up.

6. Wall Planter – You don’t need a green thumb to bring a “natural” feel to a room. Some realistic faux trailing ivy or a bunch of artificial hydrangea flowers will do wonders, and only you will know the truth.

7. Shadow Box Displaysshow off a few prized possessions or treasured mementos to personalize your décor. Use your imagination, and the possibilities are endless. And you can’t be any more unique – your art will be one of a kind.

8. Reproduction Antique Clock – Make a timely statement with an interesting and functional wall clock. Styles reminiscent of vintage establishments and cities around the world suggest they were plucked off the wall of a century-old café.

9. Coat & Hat Hooks – Face it, coats never make it into the closet when you first get home, so cut to the chase and hang some great hooks so you can at least get them off the backs of your chairs.

10. Photograph Collection – My personal favorite, and a guaranteed show stopper. Who can resist stopping to gaze at your best shots? For a really impactful display, unify the group with one consistent element, such as similar frames, the same color mats, the same size or all black and white images.

Each situation is different, so take note of what you already have and how big an area you have to work with while you consider the suggestions above. Although some options are obviously not suited to some rooms, try to visualize the space with one or more accents and run with your favorite choice.

Don’t just leave that empty wall hanging! Dress it stylishly and you will give your room the finished look it deserves, and yourself an elegantly decorated room you can be proud of.

Don’t forget Kahlua Drinks

That sensuous, dark, sweet liqueur with its rich coffee flavor brings back memories of those perfumed tropical nights when you wore a hibiscus flower in your hair, danced near swaying palms and enjoyed al fresco Mexican food with a delectable Kahlua cocktail in your hand.

Made from premium Arabica coffee beans grown in Veracruz, Mexico, Kahlua has been produced since 1936. This delightful liqueur takes its name from the language of the Veracruz people, spoken there since long before the Spanish Conquest and means “House of the Alcolhua people.”

The liqueur is used to make cocktails and also as a topping or ingredient in desserts such as cakes, ice-cream and especially cheesecake. We all remember those wonderful Kahlua Cocktail Recipes, such as Mudslides and B-52′s – which we enjoyed during our misspent youth – and we can still enjoy them!

Did you know that you can make your own Kahlua? You can use it to make your own Kahlua cocktail recipes. It’s very simple – you need a large Dutch oven or stockpot to get started. Brew a 12-cup pot of coffee; if you can use chocolate flavored coffee, it will have a richer taste. Pour the brewed coffee into the pot and gradually stir in two pounds of light brown sugar, bringing it back to a boil. Allow it to cool – you can add a cup of crushed ice to hurry it along, if you wish.

When it’s completely cooled, stir in four to six tablespoons of vanilla extract and one bottle of 190-proof Clear Springs or Everclear – tastes better than vodka because it’s smoother. If you wish, you could add a little almond extract. Pour it all into a glass (not plastic) gallon jar and allow it to sit in a dark, cool place for about a month to mature. It is, of course, critical that you taste it at least once – or twice – or even three or four times before you even think of serving it to guests!

There are other liquors which you can use to make your own Kahlua – consider brandy instead of the Clear Springs. And you can serve it in several different ways; warmed as an after-dinner digestif, or poured over crushed ice. Many like it mixed with cream and you can become very creative with your Kahlua cocktail recipes as there are lots of other mixers you can use; try adding a flavored cooler to it.

Here’s another Kahlua cocktail recipe you will love – and you can serve this as a dessert drink. Pour one part of your Kahlua and one part of Irish cream liqueur into your cocktail shaker and add two parts of good-quality vodka. Shake it well and then add one part fresh dairy cream. Pour over ice and serve in a chilled glass with whatever garnish you have on hand. You’ve just built yourself a Mudslide. And how about a Kahlua milkshake – two ounces of Kahlua, one ounce of white rum, a cup of vanilla ice-cream and some chocolate syrup. Mix it all together and pour into a tall chilled glass and serve with a pretty straw. Your Mocha Kahlua Milkshake is born.

There are so many different Kahlua cocktail recipes you can make and you’re only limited by your own imagination – let it soar! Here’s one for “After Eighteen” which is perfect for a graduation party as a dessert or an after-dinner celebration drink. You’ll need two ounces of Kahlua, two ounces of white crème de menthe and some chocolate milk or SOY chocolate milk if you have guests who are dairy-sensitive. Pour the Kahlua and the crème de menthe into a tall chilled glass, add some ice-cubes and top with chocolate milk. Want a Kahlua cocktail recipe with a kick AND a show? Here’s a Kahlua Cockroach for you if you like a little “bite” in the back of your throat. Mix one part Kahlua with two parts tequila (careful, now) and set it afire. Sip immediately through a straw; so much fun!

You’re planning a quiet intimate evening for two – dinner with candles and wine in front of the fire. When it’s time for after-dinner coffee, mix in an ounce of Kahlua. Or, complete your evening with this Kahlua cocktail recipe – two parts Kahlua mixed with two parts whipped cream and then add four parts soda water. Garnish with shaved chocolate and a colorful straw.

Any Kahlua cocktail recipe is wonderful, no matter what you mix with it. But the key to making them attractive, exciting and memorable is all in how you present them. Use a variety of glasses to serve them in. They can be tall or short, stemmed or not, colored glasses, wine glasses, tall champagne flutes. Have lots of different garnishes on hand, such as white or dark shaved chocolate, thin orange slices, fresh raspberries – you get the idea. Try “frosting” your glasses before serving the drinks – dip the rim of the glass into lemon juice and then into sugar beforehand. You can use those little tropical umbrellas, colored straws and sparklers, especially at night, perhaps outdoors on your deck as sparklers really make a party buzz.

And if you’re having a theme party, such as “tropical island” make certain you have some skewered fruits on hand; pineapple sticks or wedges – your Kahlua cocktail recipes are yours to play with, create some special tastes and flavors which your friends will love.

And here’s one more Kahlua cocktail recipe for you – do try this one as it’s definitely a party-maker. The “Flaming Lamborghini” is a fun way to add excitement to your gathering, especially if you have guests who don’t know each other as this will “break the ice!” Put one part Kahlua into a tall, narrow glass and layer one part Sambuca over it. Have two shot glasses handy and pour one part Irish Cream into one and one part of blue Curacao into the other. Now, here’s the fun part – put a straw into the Kahlua/Sambuca glass and use a taper or long matchstick to set the Sambuca alight – let it burn, but don’t let the straw melt! Add the Irish Cream and the blue Curacao at the same time and drink it through the straw!
