Getting Re-Acquainted With Something Familiar – A Nokia E7 Review

If you’re even in the market to get yourself a smartphone, chances are you’ll gravitate towards one of two things: you’d either be getting something that’s quite familiar for you, or something so different that it would excite you to get to know something new and unfamiliar once more. The Nokia E7, for all intents and purposes, is the familiar aspect of acquisition. As can be seen on some other Nokia E7 reviews, the E7 is a smartphone that’s very comfortable to use because of the familiar interface that you’ve come to expect of Nokia phones: not necessarily a bad thing, right? It really just depends on what side of the fence you’re coming from, and for most people, familiarity and comfort equals efficiency, and efficiency will always be a good thing.

The Nokia E7 is a Symbian OS 3 toting smartphone. It has a slide out landscape keypad underneath it that glides out very easily. It’s encased in anodised aluminium that just captures anyone’s attention. The physical keyboard doesn’t detract from the E7′s slim appearance at all, and the keyboard itself was a pleasure to use; they are both spacey and large, and are an amazing relief from those wafer slim keyboards. Having to use a real keyboard on a Smartphone is just dandy, as using virtual keyboards can be a pain sometimes, burdened as they are with spell checkers that are more time consuming than they’re worth.

The E7 comes with an 8 megapixel camera and takes shots wonderfully. Viewing them on the E7′s screen may be a disservice to the photos themselves, but seeing them on the computer monitor screen will elicit appreciative nods from any mobile shutterbug. The E7 also comes with  an FM radio, an mp3 player that can play multiple formats, a high speed USB interface that can also double as a quick charger. Surprisingly though, the E7 doesn’t have an external card slot of any kind. Although it has 16gb if internal memory—plenty enough for a lot of songs and media—the absence of a microSD slot is very unusual, smartphone or no smartphone.

Like most good smarphones though, the E7 also features a proximity sensor and accelerometer for orientation detection and its sharp 360 x 640 pixel is made from the world famous Gorilla glass display, which makes it scratch resistant: a potent combination for Nokia’s famous toughness. Its capacitive screen is quite responsive and shows no lag time—a pity because according to a lot of Nokia E7 reviews, its Symbian OS platform seems to be the one pulling down the E7.

It has been said many times that the Symbian platform’s time may have already come and gone, and it can barely keep up with the more popular smartphone platforms in the market namely Google’s Android, Apple‘s iOs and Palm’s WebOS. The widgets come out as clumsy, the interface for the settings is unnecessarily cumbersome when it should be inviting and the Nokia OVI online store is not as well stocked as the Apple‘s App Store and the Andoid Market. A real shame as Nokia used to be in the lead in the mobile communications market well before Apple or even Google came ashore.

Thankfully, Nokia’s basic features remain unhindered with Symbian’s awkwardness, and any Nokia E7 reviews will point out that longtime Nokia user will just feel right at home—something that might be strange to adventurous tech savvy kids, but serves a lot of people just right.

For most beer lovers, drinking a cold one is a reward in itself, whether you choose to drink it from a goblet, mug, flute glass, weizen glass, stange or (heaven forbid) right from the bottle. However, some drinkers are standing things on their ear. Beer cocktails are becoming more and more popular – these do quite a bit more than just transfer that beautiful beverage to a container to better enhance the head, aroma and flavor. Beer cocktails bring a whole new realm of taste to the party.

What’s It All About?

What are beer cocktails all about anyway? Many purists would say that if you need to combine your beer with another beverage to make it palatable, then you’re drinking the wrong brew. It’s about more than changing the “beer-y” taste of the beverage, though. It’s about experimentation, innovation, fun and yes, new flavors.

These cocktails are particularly popular in the club scene though you’ll also find them available at several of your favorite watering holes too.

Of course, you can’t confuse a beer cocktail with a shandy. While similar, they’re technically very different things. So, what’s a shandy?

Defining a Shandy

A shandy (or shandygaff) is similar to a beer cocktail in that it combines beer with another beverage. However, rather than combining a brew with distilled liquor (and/or another type of beverage), a shandy is a combination of beer and any beverage other than distilled alcohol. So, beer and lemonade would be a shandy but beer, vodka and lemonade would be a beer cocktail – a “porchcrawler” to be specific.

There are some “standard” beverages used to create shandys. GINGER ale is always popular and so is cider (the soft variety of course). Other popular mixes include Sprite, 7-Up or another citrus flavored soda variety. Lemonade and GINGER beer are also popular mixes. Mixing a shandy is largely a matter of personal preference. The usual ratio is 50/50, though those who prefer something with a bit more kick will favor a higher ratio of beer to other beverage.

You’ll find that this particular mixed drink has a pretty long history, especially in areas of Germany and the UK. You’ll also find them in Russia, Spain, Austria and more. A slightly higher octane variation of the shandy is made by mixing beer with a “malt beverage” like Smirnoff Ice or a hard lemonade or hard cider variant.

Beer Cocktail Classics

Now that you know the difference between a beer cocktail and a shandy, it’s time to delve into some of the more popular cocktail options out there. While you’ll find new drinks popping up all the time as drinkers experiment, there are some tried and true options that you’ll find pretty much anywhere. Any of these drinks can add some spice to your drinking life.

The Michelada – The Michelada is akin to the Bloody Mary in that it has a red color and brings some spice to the party. To make this cocktail, you need to mix lager with tomato juice (or soup), as well as Worcestershire, hot sauce, lime and salt. It’s an odd combination of margarita and Bloody Mary in a way. Some recipes also call for the addition of a shot of tequila to the mixture.

The Boilermaker – It’s hard to think of any beer cocktail better known than the boilermaker. Most drinkers are familiar with the beer and a shot on the side variety here, but mixing the two has become quite popular in recent years. For instance, in the UK a boilermaker is made with a shot of bourbon dropped into a pint of pale ale. Whisky, tequila and vodka can be used.

Irish Car Bomb – While the name is a bit offensive in some circles, there’s no denying the popularity of this particular cocktail. There are several variants out there, but they all use Irish stout as the beer base for the mix. Added to this is a shot of Irish cream and Irish whisky (combined in a shot glass and dropped into the pint). An interesting note here is that the cocktail has to be consumed pretty quickly or the cream will curdle, spoiling the drink.

Hangman’s blood – If you are feeling particularly adventurous, then Hangman’s blood might be just the beer cocktail for you. This cocktail combines quite a few ingredients, using porter as the base. The most common recipe is a combination of porter, rum, brandy and gin. However, a popular alternative is to mix gin, whisky, rum, port, brandy and stout, and then top it off with champagne.

Flaming doctor Pepper – For those who like to truly live on the wild side, this beer cocktail has a lot to offer. To make the drink, you’ll need to mix 3 parts of amaretto with 1 part strong liquor (Everclear, Golden Grain, Bacardi 151 and other high-octane liquors work best) in a shot glass. Don’t mix the liquors – let the high alcohol liquor float on top. This is then set on fire and promptly dropped into a pint of your preferred beer (which puts out the flames).

Why Bother?

For purists, there’s no way to convince them that beer cocktails are worth their time, and there’s really nothing wrong with that. However, for those drinkers who like to try something new every once in a while, then these beverage options can certainly open up an entirely new world of enjoyment. If you’re not that adventurous in terms of taste, you might start out with a simple shandy. You can always move on up to more exotic beverage options once you have established a comfort zone.

Heading out to experiment with beer cocktails and shandys can also be a great excuse to find some new and enjoyable bars and pubs too. After all, the atmosphere is half the fun in the equation – why not find out what other options are available to you? You might just find that you’ve overlooked a hidden gem or two.

It’s more than a girl’s phone, the Samsung Diva S7070 is a woman’s phone. While it certainly lacks that sensual appeal that the BL20 Chocolate has, the Diva has its own unique charm that makes it hard to resist. Women will love the textured back casing with its raised diamond pattern and solid white pearl color. It’s a small device, but it packs a nice touch screen giving the front of the phone that well-known smart-phone look. The flow of glass to plastic to the contoured back is seamless; the overall visual composition of the device is pleasing to the eyes and touch.

Despite being a 2G device, this phone packs decent features and as said above, unmistakable style. While people who are used to 3G HSDPA access might want to steer away from this device, younger women who only need a phone for simple calling and messaging might want to pick up the Diva for its fashionably updated look and style.

Specs and Hardware

Right off the shelf, the most noticeable feature in any mobile phone is the screen; and the screen on this device looks pretty standard. The 2.8 inch resistive touch screen is neither impressive nor remarkable, but it does not mean that the screen itself is bad. The resistive screen technology also requires the use of a stylus if a user intends to use the device carefully. The resolution of the screen is 320 x 240 pixels and it has the capacity to display up to 16 million colors.

The phone has a 960 mAh rechargeable battery that can deliver up to 800 hours of standby time and 10 hours of continuous talk time (obviously at GSM rates).

The Phone camera

The phone also has a 3.15 mega pixel camera with auto focus –it comes as an extra feature since normally, a phone like this would only have a 2.2 mega pixel camera. The only thing lacking is LED flash for taking shots in badly lit locations. Aside from that, the camera takes vivid images of up to 2048 x 1536 pixels.

Missing the Market

As one might have guessed from the phone’s name, the Samsung Diva S7070 is a woman’s phone, in particular, a young woman’s phone. While the general features, design and marketing of the phone are certainly made for the crowd; two major features in network connectivity have not been included in the phone: 3G HSDPA and wireless LAN. The lack of these two features makes the Diva a little less enticing.

After all, despite having integrated applications for Facebook and MySpace, relying on GPRS and EDGE is not a viable solution. Not when you could have had 3G at least. Even WiFi was not given to the device. Hopefully, the Diva will see a second version that actually has 3G and WiFi capabilities. Retrofitting is not new to Samsung; they recently added WiFi and 3G to the Corby (Genio Touch) and renamed the phone as Lindy. Hopefully, they do the same for the Diva.

The phone has a soon to be announced 2010 release date; expect it to come to shelves after June.
